  1. Final Cut Pro Users Group Meeting at tic

Technology Innovation Centre (tic) - 24th June 2004

Despite the unforeseen clash with the England vs Portugal quarter-final match in Euro 2004, the first ever meeting of the UK Final Cut User Group outside of London was very well attended!

Over 20 people came from various parts of the West Midlands, and beyond. Many were Final Cut Pro users at various levels – notably Rob Alexander, who has recently finished working on Tony Robinson’s latest series for Channel 4. Others came to find out just what Final Cut Pro might offer them.
Rick Young, who specialises in DV editing with Final Cut Pro and has written a number of books on the subject made the presentation. He first looked at Final Cut’s Media Management tools, followed by a demonstration of DVD Studio Pro 3 – Apple’s professional DVD authoring software.

Rick commented on the response: “This has to have been the most enthusiastic audience I have spoken to for a long time. The two hour meeting passed by incredibly quickly, we covered a lot of ground and there was plenty of audience interaction.”

The next User Group Meeting at the Media Vault is scheduled for Thursday 30th September 2004. Entry is free, but registration in advance is essential in order to attend. Please email Chris Roberts – chris.roberts@tic.ac.uk - for details.

  2. Wired Inspired Technology Zone

Technology Innovation Centre (tic) - 5th - 9th July 2004

A week-long ICT camp was held in Birmingham from July 5th - 9th. It was a unique experience for 30 teenagers to get hands-on understanding of the very latest computer technology.

Created by Birmingham and Solihull’s New Technology Institute and supported by the Learning and Skills Council Birmingham and Solihull and Microsoft, the Wired, Inspired Technology Zone involved Year 10 youngsters from each of three Birmingham schools.

WITZ attendees spent two days at UCE’s Technology Innovation Centre (tic) where they built, and raced, their own robots, as well as spending time in tic’s Media Vault. As part of this section of the programme, the teenagers were treated to presentations about Interactive TV and Media in the Home, given by Lewis Hunt and Mat Randall.

They then experienced how the tic’s Virtual TV Studio operates and were involved in the creation of 3-D graphics of themselves, using the Avatar Booth. With the assistance of tic’s Maureen Davis and Chris Alvey, the students, having been filmed and scanned, were placed into 3-D computer generated environments.

Together with other organisations that provided activities in the WITZ week, the Media Vault team hopes the teenagers who took part will be ‘wired and inspired’ to take up careers in IT and e-Media.

  3. AV In Practice

Chelsea Village, Stamford Bridge, London - 8th July 2004

On July 8th, Media Vault gave a presentation as part of AV Magazine’s ‘AV-In-Practice’ event held at Chelsea Village, Stamford Bridge, London. The event aimed to help users better understand different media, and their applications, through a mix of case studies and content ideas.

The scope of the event ranged from straightforward presentations to satellite television, from retail applications to video conferencing, and from interactive whiteboards to IP networks.

Seminars and workshops were free to visitors, and were supported by an exhibition featuring the latest A/V technology. Media Vault participated in the ‘A/V goes to college’ session. This focused on the practicalities of using Media Vault’s A/V asset management resources, combined with its digital media creation and distribution activities.

The Media Vault presentation introduced the tic, covering both who it works with and for, and the relevant media with which it deals. It went on to explore the technologies with which tic is involved, and how it offers A/V asset management and distribution within the scope of the media concerned. It also covered how tic set up Media Vault, how its systems are managed and controlled, and how potential users could benefit from tic’s knowledge and experience.
Emphasis was laid on the importance of the successful development of Media Vault’s relationships with enthusiastic clients and partners since these had enabled the project to work so well.

  4. The Media Vault - Work in Progress

Check out some of the work we've done so far and what our clients have said about it. For more information on other clients we've worked with visit our website at www.tic-online.com/mediavault and click on the case studies link.

Cyberjenn, Concept Innovation Design
:: Digital Asset Management

International creator of 3D animations and characters, Cyberjenn required a secure area where it could both up-load files and show clients work-in-progress on their projects. Cyberjenn also wanted to find a way to enable clients to provide feedback on projects as they progressed. Rather than use traditional methods, the company wanted a managed, advanced, technological solution.

MediaVault gave Cyberjenn remote access to the DAM (Digital Asset Management system) via a secure username and password.

As it is web-based, no special software was required and the Cyberjenn team were able to upload their animated movies, create storyboards and add metadata (electronic means of detailed annotation) about each particular visual item (asset). They were also able to further annotate an item without affecting the original file.

From the very start of any given project, relevant ideas can now be up-loaded. This speeds up the consultation process and immerses all the parties involved in the project. Time and cost savings from no longer needing to ship items around the world for client-approval are immense. The rapid connection, possible with the DAM, makes transferring material very fast and economical.

The Client's Quote:
“With imagination and great design skills, Media Vault helped Cyberjenn with the launch of its new website. This had generated an exceptional amount of enquiries relating to corporate use of our virtual characters and environments for inventive PR campaigns and events. The Media Vault’s digital asset management system (DAM) allows us to transmit project files and receive feedback from clients in a fraction of the time this would normally take. The DAM is also contributing to the expansion of our client base on a global scale. Cyberjenn says a big thank you to the Media Vault Team.”

David Broadbent, Cyberjenn Concept Innovation Design

One Small Barking Dog
:: Digital Asset Management

Pip Piper is a Midlands freelance Film Producer, well known for creating dynamic and engaging media, and specialising in film projects.

As Director of the ‘One Small Barking Dog’ production company, he required a method of enabling clients to view their ongoing work and provide feedback.

The tic provided Pip Piper and his clients with access to the Media Vault’s DAM (Digital Asset Management) resource and its facility to upload Quicktime movie files. Once files are uploaded, clients can annotate ‘directly on to the medium itself’. By utilising the DAM’s annotation feature, Pip Piper gets client-feedback faster than ever before. Crucially it enables him to turn round film projects in less time.

The Client's Quote: "The Media DAM is potentially the best emerging resource for the creative industry in the West Midlands. If you haven't tapped into its potential you need to urgently."
Pip Piper, Director - One Small Barking Dog

Blue Hippo Music & Media - www.bluehippomedia.co.uk
:: Website Design & Development

Blue Hippo Music and Media brings together established creative professionals in its two specialist areas. Its activities also encompass diverse other creative activities such as animation, film and video editing, sound recording and production of pop and promo videos, script development, PR and electronic press kits [EPKs], recording facilities, CD and DVD authoring and duplication, web-design and e-marketing - in fact the widest possible range of creative industries support.

Rob Taylor and Pip Piper are behind Blue Hippo, bringing together Rob’s music management activities (Blue Hippo Management) and Pip’s independent film company. They collaborate through joint ventures whilst also retaining individual specialisms.

Rob approached tic’s Media Vault to develop an Internet-presence which would promote the joint company and showcase their portfolio of music, artists and film projects.

A Blue Hippo Music & Media website had to convey the company’s highly professional capabilities. It also had to be easy to navigate and have a structure to display to fullest advantage the joint businesses.

This involved widely varied information needing to be communicated in an aesthetically pleasing, yet straightforward way. It also had to be simple to update as news was added about film projects and new music artists.

The Media Vault’s resulting website design has effectively fulfilled all the client’s criteria.

The Client's Quote:
“I am very pleased with the design/concept quality of site. The Media Vault staff have been very helpful and patient!”

Rob Taylor, Blue Hippo Music and Management

New Dimensions Designs - www.newdimensionsdesigns.co.uk
:: Website Design & Development

Full-service, computer-aided design and analysis studio, New Dimensions Designs Ltd, provides both UK and international clients with design services for engineering and consumer products.

Covering concept-planning through to completion, the company’s wide ranging services include design engineering, precision 3D modelling and detailing, finite element analysis, prototyping, design product consulting, forensic investigations, 3D visualisation and illustration, digital graphics, graphic design and in-house design projects.

New Dimensions Designs’ Dwight Brown asked the tic's Media Vault to develop an internet presence to showcase the company’s extensive portfolio of computer-aided design and analysis services.

It was crucial that the website reflected New Dimensions Designs’ highly professional computer-based design capabilities. However, it had to be easy to navigate, because of the company’s extensive list of services. It also had to be simple to update.

The final design used the colour of the corporate logo and gave a clean, simple feel to the complex range of services on offer.

A tic short training course in Website Design has been recommended to provide Dwight Brown with skills to update the site himself.

The Client's Quote: “New Dimensions Designs Ltd is pleased with the excellent job that was done on their behalf by the Technology Innovation Centre (tic). The website has been a great source of publicity for the company and several visitors have commented that it is very attractive and easy to navigate. New Dimensions Designs Ltd is delighted with the delivery and presentation of the website by the tic and would like to thank the team for their much appreciated effort and professional skills that made this project a success.”
Dwight Brown, New Dimensions Designs

Peace Out Productions

:: Supply of Key Technical Resources

UK Hip Hop is growing and maturing, without selling out to the corporate pop world. Aerosolik Records is a company which represents independent UK Hip Hop artists, including Plymouth-based trio, The Cohorts.

Aerosolik invited Peace Out Productions, to make a music video for the Cohorts. The budget was inevitably fairly lean.

Peace Out Productions called on Media Vault’s equipment resources and facilities. DVCAM cameras were used to shoot on location around Birmingham’s Eastside.

The video’s post production then involved producing various versions of the track – including a “clean” radio-friendly version – and a montage of out-takes form the video, using Media Vault’s Final Cut Pro facilities.

MTV Distribution, and cable broadcaster UTV, have expressed interest in broadcasting the track.

The Client’s Quote: “The assist offered by the tic gave people struggling for experience the chance to be a part of something creative, challenging and a damn good laugh. The assist has also helped independent artists reach a wider audience with a professional music video.

Although your mouth is always dry at the tic the service and support we received was second to none and the prices are just right for the smaller production companies and freelancers such as Peace Out Productions. As they say in the hip hop world; Wurd to y’all at tic!”

Phill Eltringham, Producer, Peace Out Productions

Open Mind Surgery

:: Supply of Key Technical Resources

'The Larder', a melodrama with a horrific twist by Billy J Jackson of Open Mind Surgery, was filmed using Media Vault’s technical resources. The short narrative film, (in the style of Tales of the Unexpected), sees intruders menace the isolated farmhouse in which’hero’, Alex, entertains guests at a sumptuous dinner party - part of a ritual established by Alex's deceased father. Old friends gather to honour the father’s memory and enjoy the culinary skills passed down to his only son. The introduction of a young French woman, Yvette, to the occasion brings youth and freshness, in contrast to its otherwise archaic decadence.

Tension builds as it is realised that the party are not alone. Alex leaves the table to investigate a disturbance and it becomes apparent that things are not as they seem. The film then moves towards an unexpected and horrific finale.

Location shooting was facilitated by the Media Vault's DVCAM cameras and sound equipment and final editing completed using the Final Cut Pro suites. The film will be shown at the Bigbamboo and FinalCut Film festivals in Brighton. It is also hoped that it will be shown at the tic Short Digital Film Festival in September. It is also entered for the following festivals: Raindance, Milano Film Fest, Bradford Film Fest, Kinofilm (Manchester), Hull International Short Film Festival.

The Client’s Quote: “The Media Vault's service's and help were graciously received, creating a great short film that is now making its way into festivals. During my experience at the Media Vault I found David Taylor, Maureen Davis and Chris Roberts a pleasure to work with. I hope they continue this work well into the future to give others the opportunity to create their vision and persue careers in the industry as I am doing. THANK YOU MEDIA VAULT!”
Billy J Jackson, Open Mind Surgery
