2. Review of February's Creative Networks Event

Thursday 23rd February from 6.00pm til LATE at tic, Millennium Point

February’s Creative Networks was a spectacular double-pronged event. The Region’s creative talent was given the opportunity to experience an absolutely stunning free, full-length demonstration in the UK's first purpose-built digital planetarium. The delegates chatted about the show over complimentary hot food and refreshments, recovering their energy for ‘Get that Contract’, the evening’s main event with seasoned TV executive Arnie Kinbrum.

The evening finished with a brainstorming session for this Summer’s Creative Networks 2006 Showcasing Event, and the invitation to professionals to participate in the Steering Group to make this much-needed exhibition a reality.

The Planetarium Show @ ThinkTank

Mario Di Maggio - Planetarium Manager
ThinkTank, Birmingham Science Museum

web www.thinktank.ac
phone 0121 202 2258

Mario described how modern planetariums had evolved into immersive cinemas. They transport audiences to places only imagined until now, putting them at the very centre of the action. Our audience experienced a comprehensive demonstration of the multi-functionality of the theatre and just what digital planetariums are now capable of.

There was an ulterior motive for the free show, since Mario Di Maggio, the Planetarium Manager, wanted members of our networks to consider how the immersive content of the dome could be developed in ThinkTank. If you are keen to get involved, please get in contact with Mario to discuss your original ideas for entertainment, educational, factual, VJ, film or any other type of potential dome based content.

Summaries of the Open Floor Pitches
As always, there were many creative industry professionals who wanted to pitch at February’s event. Some arrived with a prepared presentation, while others decided to give an impromptu call for collaboration to an audience of over 130 guests. Jas Sian made the first pitch about how his company could help out the many freelancers in our industry

The New Grey Whistle Test’s whole idea is to carry on from the BBC Old Grey Whistle Test which gave a media platform to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Simply Red, John Lennon, Dr Hook, Jimi Hendrix and countless others. The New Grey Whistle Test has a slight change in that it gives a much needed media platform to new bands and solo artists working with today's technology.....the Internet. White Canvas

White Canvas is able to provide clients with all the media solutions that a large agency could offer at highly competitive prices. This is because they are a web-based company which enables them to keep their overheads low. The company cater for any budget without a drop in quality or effort. Saqib highlighted the fact that Birmingham has a high proportion of residents who do not speak English, and White Canvas can help its clients tap into this often unseen revenue stream. If you’d like to find out how your business could benefit from Arabic, Urdu and Greek translation, just drop them a line.

Guest Speaker
Arnie Kinbrum - Successful TV Executive
Topic:
"Get That Contract "

The evening’s guest speaker was Arnie Kinbrum, a veteran of the television industry with over 25 years experience. Arnie has had stretches at both Yorkshire and Central Television in various financial, strategic and operational roles.
He was General Manager of Pearson Television International where part of his role was convincing organisations to buy his programmes.

He has also carried out a number of consultancy assignments including an assessment of Digital Asset Management for the RTL Group.

Having spent the last few years in consultancy roles in the media industry, working with organisations in the area of content for new technology, Arnie is currently the Head of Media for the industry leader in digital screen systems on transport in the UK.

Arnie gave an inspired presentation to Creative Networks on how to ‘Get That Contract’ in the television industry, and the key points from this are summarised below:

Research
Watch television and know the channels you are aiming for
Find out about the commissioning editor and what they’re looking for
Discover which channels are commissioning and for what time slots
What audiences watch particular slots: demographics
Read Broadcast (Weekly trade publication)

Persistence
It’s difficult and frustrating and you will be knocked back countless times
The people who get their programmes commissioned are the ones who are persistent
Investigate how you can utilise new technology to become unique ie. Broadband

Networking
It’s not about who you know or what you know, it’s about who knows you
Attend networking events and get yourself and your company known
Use intermediaries to get to the person you want to speak to

Arnie told us how TV is still a London-based industry, however there are production companies thriving in Birmingham, so there is no reason why others can’t join them if they have the right business skills.

Summer Showcasing Event - Steering Group

Following the presentation from Arnie, tic's Steve Smith announced that tic is in negotiations with Millennium Point to host a showcasing event this Summer to exhibit the wares of Birmingham’s creative industry to both the public and potential buyers of media content.

The Network enthusiastically contributed ideas for what this might include - interactive games, hologram projections, photography, live theatre and VJ graphics to name but a few.

Future Creative Networks events will have designated timeslots where the Showcase Steeing Group will discuss the direction of the summer event.
