| For the Creative
Audience... |
| Summary of the
Market Awareness Session |
| The Region's business
development and support organisations made presentations which
identified the creative potential which exists within their
industries. They explored the importance of media/ICT in a
variety of industries in order to stimulate discussion with
representatives from sectors such as Higher Value Added Consumer
Goods, Food & Drink and Tourism & Leisure. |
 |
Summary of presentation...
Mike is the Cluster manager from Advantage West Midlands
(AWM). He is responsible for Higher Added Value Consumer
Goods (HAVCG) which includes the local glass, leather, jewellery,
and furniture industries.
Mike explained that these business sectors are changing
and there is an increased emphasis on innovation, quality
and style. Opportunities are abundant for modern and diversifying
companies. He believes that the future of the Region lies
in the uptake of new technologies which also encourage collaborative
working practices. This will help businesses exploit new
markets and business opportunities. |
 |
Summary of presentation...
Anthony highlighted how the business need for design and
other creative/digital support begins with the effective
Branding. He examined how the business then portrays itself
in the marketplace through and effective Web-presence which
every modern business should have. He emphasised that future
success relies on the effective use of technology, from
SMS messaging to 3d design for use in PDA's. In short the
message from Business Link was, 'don't tell me show me'...

Summary of presentation...
Sue described her department and gave some insights into
the current position of the F&D cluster and its component
companies' varied use of media.
Her team work mainly with SMEs, along the food and drink
production chain from growers through to food producers
and technology manufacturers. Main target markets are Europe,
Dubai, Asia and Australia. Existing marketing usage varies.
One company may use very little marketing material, whilst
others use every type of media, including TV advertising.
A recent website project with Brighton University revealed
that small F&D companies appear slow to take up new
media - and even companies which do have a good web presence
in the UK are not found on some overseas web searches.
In this cluster the best prospects for creatives were considered
to be technology manufacturers and larger SMEs. Sue's team
is to feature the services and work of tic
and its Creative Networks in their next newsletter. |
|
|
Summary of presentation...
The Regional Centre for Tourism Business Support is a partnership
between Regional Development Agency, Advantage West Midlands,
and the Region's six Business Links. The Centre provides
help, advice and support directly to tourism, leisure and
hospitality businesses to help them improve their performance.
Howard stressed that the Centre needs to be made aware of
new technology and innovation in order to get its message
out to clients.
Businesses in this sector have varying levels of marketing
knowledge, with many relying on passing trade and scattergun
publication advertising. The vast majority of the businesses
produce leaflets and brochures of some kind.
However there are an increasing number of businesses looking
at more innovative marketing, which may be anything from
a simple marketing website to on-line booking /e-commerce
and virtual tours. Some are also looking at email marketing,
producing on-line newsletters and brochures. Some accommodation
providers are also now adding wireless hotspots/ freespots
as added benefits to their customers.
The challenge for the Centre is to encourage small tourism
businesses to use technology and innovation. |

Summary of presentation...
Andy stated that "the regeneration of the Jewellery
Quarter presents many opportunities for creative enterprises
among some 500 jewellery or jewellery-related businesses.
This includes over 100 specialist retailers, 50 designer-
makers and festivals such as 'Brilliantly Birmingham', which
attracts many visitors. There are plans for a new public
square and improvements to greenspaces and streets in the
Quarter. Additionally, there are an increasing amount of
affordable workspaces which are attracting a growing number
of creative businesses drawn by the Quarter's unique ambience.
This clustering in workspace developments such as the Big
Peg and the Argent Centre present a particularly convenient
opportunity to interface with Jewellery Quarter businesses." |
 |
Summary of presentation...
Starting up in business is a big step. Shihab's message
was that businesses shouldn't be afraid to ask for support
and advice. There are a number of external agencies which
support pre-start-up, recent start-ups and young businesses,
many of which offer subsidised or even free support! He
invited such businesses to give VC Consulting a call because
"they're there to help YOU!" |
| Summary of the
Investment Opportunities Session |
| The Buyers Forum provided
a rare opportunity for our Creative Networks to hear from
four major regional investment sources. Their scope and degree
of investment varied, but their aim was consistent: to encourage
local businesses to grow and diversify. The company owners
and business operators present had the chance to learn more
about how to access the finance necessary to be able to maintain
growth, and contribute to the future of the region. Whether
businesses need finance for research, marketing, new product
development, or merchandising - these are the kind of people
they need to meet. |
| |
Summary of presentation...
Rex advised his audience that The Advantage Creative Fund
invests in creative businesses in the West Midlands region.
It invests by taking an equity stake in companies. The Fund
invests from £25,000 up to £150,000. It seeks ambitious
companies who want to grow rapidly. There are no application
forms but a well developed realistic business plan is needed
to start the ball rolling. Existing businesses, as well
as new start ups can apply. The fund usually looks for partnership
investment, working with banks or other funders to ensure
that promising businesses have sufficient finance to develop.
Once an investment has been made, ongoing support and aftercare
will help the business and the fund's grow. For businesses
interested it is a good idea to register on the website
at an early stage, even before the business plan is complete. |

cannot raise the finance required through a bank.
Start-ups and existing businesses up to 5 years old,

- existing businesses must be willing to transfer banking
to one of these.

Summary of presentation...
Lee introduced the substantial Screen West Midlands
Film & Media Production Fund which first invested in
Coventry based film-maker Debbie Issit's "Confetti"
(a collaboration with BBC Films and Wasted Talent). This
fund can invest up to £300,000 or 25% of a project's budget,
whichever is lesser.
Lee said that, at the time of speaking, the other prime
source of funding he was responsible - the Advantage Development
Fund - had yet to be finalised, but will be able to invest
between 10-30k in a range of TV, games and film development
projects. This is due to launch this summer, so watch the
website for details.
Since the presentation, it has been announced that the deadline
for Digital Shorts 2005 will be 5pm Monday 4th July 2005!!
Dan Lawson, New Talent Manager explains, "Digital Shorts
is back for another year, and we're looking for the most
promising new filmmaking talent in the West Midlands to
take part. A total of 16 projects will undertake an intensive
development programme, and a minimum of 8 short films will
be produced."
For further information on its full activity range Lee recommends
the Screen West Midlands website as a great place to start! |
| Summary of the
Bigger Business Insight Session |
| This session brought
together a number of speakers from large organisations. Focusing
on their various media needs, they highlighted the importance
of researching these organisations, in order to choose the
best means of accessing the opportunities available. |

Summary of presentation...
Geraldine briefly described the BBC Big Screen Project,
whereby large outdoor screens are being used in city centres,
providing standard BBC content but also relaying special
events. The Birmingham screen is on the side of the Town
Hall, facing the library in Chamberlain Square. It has recently
broadcast sporting events such as the FA Cup Final, but
also other local events such as the St. George's Day Concert
from Symphony Hall, and the VE Day celebrations. Geraldine
is keen for local creatives to send her interesting content
to be broadcast on the Birmingham screen and on other screens
around the country. This content could be short films, animations
or other motion graphics. Also welcome are ideas for interactive
content. Unfortunately Geraldine does not have a budget
for content, but stressed that the Big Screen provides an
excellent opportunity for showcasing your talent, with tickers
showing your credits whilst the content is played. The walk-by
audience is estimated at 170,000 per weekend, so this is
not an opportunity to be sneezed at! |

Summary of presentation...
Raja Khan described the exciting new satellite TV channel
his company is launching, Raj TV. Having obtained an Ofcom
Licence the channel is due to go live in September. This
will be the first ever British, English-speaking satellite
television channel, targeting Asian market audiences in
the UK, Asia and worldwide. It will broadcast concurrently
to an international audience via the Internet. Based in
Birmingham, Raj TV is developing its own production units
and is looking to work with other content producers to fill
its 24/7 output. So if you have any content ideas for Raj
TV 's audience now is the opportunity to get in at the start.

Summary of presentation...
Tom Hamilton was representing this multi-billion turnover
corporation. He explained that BT operates a separate website
www.selling2bt.com to help source its supplies. BT also
operates approved supplier schemes. He suggested that smaller
creative companies could profitably identify these approved
suppliers and then work with them to supply content to BT.
He also described how BT is changing as an organisation
from a telecoms operator to become a company supplying solutions
for the digital networked community. So watch this space. |
 |
Summary of presentation...
Tim described the the role of Marketing Birmingham in projecting
Birmingham as a great European City and in maintaining its
position as Britain's second city. Clearly, there is a need
for innovative marketing materials. Tim pointed out that
the organisation has been undergoing reorganisation. This
should be complete in about two weeks time. As the new leadership
gets established this could be the time to get content ideas
in front of them. |

Di Maggio - Planetarium Manager
Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum

 |
Summary of presentation...
Mario Di Maggio gave an enthusiastic account of the upcoming
Digital Planetarium in Birmingham's Thinktank, at Millennium
Point. Special software will blend the images from 6 LCD
projectors to form a single unified image on a hemispherical
screen. The audience recline in sloped seats such that their
whole field of view is filled by the display. Of course
planetariums are used conventionally to illustrate the sky
by night with stars and planets. However, Mario would love
additional content, especially for teaching about the orbits
of the moon and the solar system, but creatives may have
other valuable ideas! Mario pointed out that there is a
growing international presence of digital planetariums.
For anyone able to develop interesting content, there is
the potential for a lucrative niche market. |

modelling and animation. He has created a CGI character
in one of the leading 3D modelling packages. It is a specialised

However, its popularity is not just confined to the entertainment
industry, it is also used for product visualisation. Satinderpal
demonstrated how the tic's Avatar can be used to produce
