Thursday 26th June - From 6.00pm until 10.00pm at tic, Millennium Point

Creative Networks unlocks the Secrets of Success
As usual, the evening started in the café at 6pm with the opportunity to talk and network with other individuals and companies representing the creative industries across the region.

This month, our event examined the question of why some people seem to have the secrets of success. They make things look easy and always seem to be in the right place, at the right time.

Our keynote speaker, 'inspirational educator', Chris Williams expanded on his philosophy that success is no accident; all you need to do is follow a definite plan.

Chris has over 30 years of business experience, including a very successful sales and marketing career, as well as the creation of a multi-million pound company supplying productivity improvement solutions.

Our audience, who ignored the Euro 2008 football on TV, were rewarded with an entertaining presentation that focussed on personal success planning. Chris helped us to realise our full potential, ensuring that it's us who are in the right place, at the right time, with the right things to say.

This was our 44th Creative Networks event and we'd like to say a special thank you to Advantage West Midlands for sponsoring our activities this month.

23 Essex Street

23 Essex Street is Birmingham's best kept secret! We're located behind the Hippodrome, next to Southside Appartments. We're a 2 level venue with an outdoor terrace (under construction) with v.i.p rooms avaliable.

We've had the likes of Bobby and Steve (garage city), local dj's such as Open Minded People and outside promoters such as Retail Therapist. We have a number of nights available for outside promoters to hire this venue.

This hidden, almost secret bar has quickly become the it place to be and be seen in Birmingham. Every part of this intimate bar had been painstakingly thought about.

Every element has been styled to the highest standard giving it in equal measures the bourgeois feel of a Parisian cafe and the edgy sophistication of an East London pub. Tucked away around the back of the Arcadian has meant if you don't know it's not there you are not going to go.

This has meant the clientele is a 100% strictly in the know crowd. With just being a 2-minute walk from the Arcadian it also means you are never too far from the rest of the action.

Guest Speaker - Chris Williams - Unlock the Secrets of Success

Chris Williams
Creative Networks unlocks the Secrets of Success

To an audience who had braved the rain to be at Creative Networks, our speaker Chris Williams explained his ideas about what it takes to achieve personal success.

Recognising that it’s very useful for us all to 'network', Chris stressed the importance of the 'work' part of the word. As an icebreaker, he asked us to introduce ourselves to three people in the audience that we did not know. This did indeed require a bit of 'work' and demonstrated that the first step to personal success is to sell ourselves to other people.

We are, according to Chris a very negative nation. When asked how we are, we generally respond with a 'not bad' or 'ok'. However, if you ask an American how they are, they will invariably respond with a 'fantastic' or 'great'. To get over our natural self deprecation and our very English philosophy of finding fault with everything, we should embrace the 'English Dream' - like the 'American Dream'. The point being, this would be far more positive than seeming to suffer constant 'nightmares'!

By introducing his 'transformational talk' in this way, Chris managed to get us all to interact and generally have a more positive outlook. The message was immediately understood, in the sense that each and every one of us can start to turn our success around and benefit with nothing more than a positive outlook.

Chris acknowledged that everyone who attended the event had already taken a step to make their own success - simply by turning up to the event. He said that being in business for yourself with the ability to be creative are two very strong positive steps towards personal planning success, embracing these and looking to the future are a great step in achieving your goals.

What does success mean? Well, Chris explained that success could be anything, from financial success; to personal gratification and contentment; to happiness – to quote Ken Dodd, the greatest gift that we possess. There are many personal views as to what things constitute success, but generally the process of succeeding can be broken down into the following aspects:

Progressive
dot Realisation
dot Worthwhile
dot Pre-determined
dot Personal
dot Goals

You as a person can create success, Chris stated that to get where you need to go, it is essential to take a positive direction and to set and achieve goals.

To achieve these goals, you have to be SMART

Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Tangible

We can use this acronym in all aspects of our lives; it represents forward thinking and a positive approach. It can be supported by other means, Chris urged us to:

Crystallize our thinking
dot Write plans with deadlines
dot Have a burning desire
dot Have supreme self-confidence
dot And dogged determination

Concluding his entertaining presentation, Chris emphasized this approach with a quote from another inspirational figure, Paul J Meyer, who said: "Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe and enthusiastically act upon…..must inevitably come to pass!"

Our audience was keen to put questions to Chris, so we spent some time discussing ways in which to develop a more positive outlook and take steps in the right direction to achieve our goals. After this event, there was no doubting that our attendees, engaged in whatever line of creative endeavour, are intent on achieving that elusive success and will do everything that Chris recommended in order to realize their potential.

On that note, we thanked Chris, for his lively contribution to the evening, plus our Sponsors AWM and adjourned to the Woodman pub for more ‘networking’ – the difference this month being that we were all acutely aware that this aspect of ‘working’ is every bit as valuable, to succeeding in our individual enterprises, as our actual creative skills.

West Midlands companies winning London 2012 business benefits

Twenty four West Midlands companies and organisations have already won work supplying the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), over half of them small and medium (SMEs) size, and many more have been supplying the ODA's contractors. The latest London 2012 business engagement figures published today also show that SMEs make up over 87% of the 1500 companies from the West Midlands registered on the unique 'dating agency' which aims to match businesses with London 2012 related opportunities. Nearly 150 businesses have been automatically referred through CompeteFor to the local Business Link for business improvement support.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and London Organising Committee (LOCOG) expect to allocate over £6bn of work as part of an estimated 75,000 future business opportunities covering direct contractors and their supply chains over the coming years. The 'London 2012 Business Network', which can be accessed at www.london2012.com/business provides information about London 2012 related business and events and links to the 'CompeteFor' service, a business 'dating agency' supported by Advantage West Midlands matches companies to opportunities supplying London 2012 contractors. Up to a fifth of London 2012 supply chain opportunities are expected to go through the CompeteFor system.

West Midlands companies that have been working directly with the ODA include Barhale Construction of Walsall, which will provide a deep foul sewer system and pumping station for the Olympic Park and has already posted subcontractor opportunities on CompeteFor. Many more local companies have been supplying the ODA's contractors including Pipe " Tube Group of Wolverhampton, which has supplied tubing for conveyor belt rollers involved in clearing the Olympic Park and concrete pumping machines supporting the start of construction.

ODA Chairman John Armitt said:
"We want to work with the best of businesses in the West Midlands, large and small, to deliver the venues and infrastructure for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and a lasting legacy. It is a challenging project and we are on track. Creating a level playing field to ensure we get the best of business is an important part of this and companies in the West Midlands are showing an encouraging appetite to be part of this once in a lifetime opportunity."

Advantage West Midlands 2012 Business Manager, Jim Johnston, said:
"Already many businesses in the West Midlands have supplied goods and services to previous Olympic Games, and other major sports events around the world. CompeteFor now gives all firms in the West Midlands an unparalleled opportunity to prepare to sell to London 2012. I urge them all to register on the CompeteFor system at www.london2012.com/business"

Creative Republic

Creative Republic
Launched in the Spring, a new body - Creative Republic - has already secured over 200 supporters that will help it to provide a strong, independent voice on behalf of the region’s creative and cultural industries.

Securing signatories to its new Charter is helping Creative Republic to gain credibility and recognition for the sectors’ collective contribution. This in turn will help to ensure that Creative Republic’s voice is heard by decision makers because the more people that sign up, the stronger, louder and more effective Creative Republic’s voice will be.

Whilst the organisation will ultimately focus on representation, marketing and networking, Creative Republic is currently concentrating on delivering an active events programme. Details can be found on the website. If you haven’t already done so, Creative Republic invites you to add your voice by signing up to its Charter www.creativerepublic.org.uk/charter.
