Thursday 24th November From 6.00pm til LATE at tic, Millennium Point
BUSINESS SUPPORT FAIR
The tic’s effort to support creative industries through providing networking and collaboration opportunities continued this November with the 2005 Business Support Fair. A range of support organisations were invited to the tic to discuss how they could support the growth of young businesses and help establish ventures to remain competitive.

After last month’s pilot, Keith Osman's key fob system offered streamlined entry for registered network members. A simple swipe of their barcodes printed a label, allowing them into the event without the need for queuing. |
The evening took on a more leisurely pace than usual with three hours to relax and see all that was on offer. Delegates took the opportunity to mingle with fellow industry professionals and chat to the stallholders about the incredible amount of support and opportunities that are available to our industry. Everybody went away safe in the knowledge that a strong network of organisations is firmly in place to support them and help their businesses prosper.

Anthony highlighted how the business need for design and other creative/digital support begins with effective branding. He examined how the business then portrays itself in the marketplace through a strong web-presence which every modern business should have. It was emphasised that future success relies on the effective use of technology, from SMS messaging to 3D design for use in PDA's. In short, the message from Business Link was, 'don't tell me, show me'. |
 |
Starting up in business is a big step, and Shibab Hossain conveyed this message to the creatives throughout the evening. His bottom line was that businesses shouldn't be afraid to ask for support and advice. There are a number of external agencies which support pre-start-up, recent start-ups and young businesses, many of which offer subsidised or even free support! He invites such businesses to give VC Consulting a call because "they're there to help YOU!" |

|
Rex advised the network that The Advantage Creative Fund invests in creative businesses in the West Midlands region by taking an equity stake in small enterprises. The Fund invests from £25,000 up to £150,000 in ambitious companies who want to grow rapidly. There are no application forms, but a well developed, realistic business plan is needed to start the ball rolling. Existing businesses, as well as new start-ups can apply. The fund usually looks for partnership investment, working with banks or other funders to ensure that promising businesses have sufficient finance to develop. |

|
The BBC Big Screen Manager for Birmingham, Geraldine McCullagh, discussed how SME’s can get involved with the Big Screen. The project is a partnership between the BBC, Birmingham City Council, Philips and screen sponsors, the Royal Bank of Scotland Group. Standing tall in Chamberlain Square in the heart of the city centre, the screen is 25 square metres, broadcasts 24 hours a day and features terrestrial and freeview BBC channels. As well as showcasing up to 8 half hour segments of work by local film makers daily, the screen uses a ticker and text box to run local information. It also hosts and supports local events such as Artsfest and Discovery Day. |
 |
Raj TV’s representatives described their exciting new satellite TV channel. The channel obtained an Ofcom Licence and went live in September. This will be the first ever British, English-speaking satellite television channel, targeting Asian market audiences in the UK, Asia and worldwide. It will broadcast concurrently to an international audience via the Internet. Based in Birmingham, Raj TV is developing its own production units and is looking to work with other content producers to fill its 24/7 output. So if you have any content ideas for Raj TV 's audience, now is the opportunity to get involved from the start. |
